CELEBRITIES ::: Last night, police were called to the Palomar Hotel in Dallas, Texas by an employee per Nicki Minaj’s request following a scuffle at the hotel’s pool. Grapevine sez Nicki got into a verbal tiff with an unidentified male she was staying with. The row moved to her hotel room where NM told police the man smacked her in the lower lip. When police arrived the unknown man had already left the premises and Nicki asked to not file charges on the attacker whom she stated was not in a relationship with.

Beauty Is in the Eye of the Beholder (Cosmetics)

Scott Schuman, aka the Sartorialist, tossed a few hater words toward girliebloggers when interviewed for Style.com:

Now all it takes is a digital camera for anyone to become a blogger—even if her only subject is herself.
I’m not really a fan of personal style blogs—you know, the ones [on which] these girls just shoot their outfits and all this stuff. I haven’t seen one that I really like or that draws my attention every day. The good and bad of that is that most these girls only have a limited wardrobe; they don’t have many clothes to shoot and I don’t think most of them have come up with looks that are that interesting, that draw me.

However, I do think that it will leave a great social document for 100 years from now. A lot of these girls are just everyday girls from cities all over America and all over the world, and it will be great to be able to look back and say, “Wow, this is how real girls were kind of into that thing, dressed at that time.” And then maybe historically they’ll be able to pull out similarities. It seems like every girl, everywhere in the world, has a pair of denim cutoff shorts… but I don’t think it’s so much of a contemporary thing but what it will mean historically.

I immediately became aware of the similarities in blog style that Mr. Sartorialist and Ms. Gevison share: clean, elegant, lots of white space. Seriously, what's wrong with striving to be fashionable, stylish and beautiful?

So... if you were designing a new blog (or maybe switching templates) should you not consider a more simple, elegant style? Michael certainly did!

TeeVee singing competition: PASTE reports that reality-TV mega-producer Mark Burnett’s latest project will be a singing competition for NBC called The Voice of America. Naturally, like all of the other singing competition rip-off shows, this one will be based on the Dutch show "The Voice of Holland." Yawn, yawn, yawn and yawn!

MYTH!!! Teenagers are abandoning blogs, while members of the "G.I. Generation" are flocking to Facebook. These are two of the findings in a new report from the Pew Internet & American Life Project, which put out a similar "Generations" report last year. REALLY?

"The primary adult data in this report is based on the findings of a daily tracking survey on Americans' use of the Internet. The results in this report are based on data from telephone interviews conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates International between April 29 and May 30, 2010, among a sample of 2,252 adults ages 18 and older, including 744 reached on a cell phone. Interviews were conducted in English. For results based on the total sample, one can say with 95% confidence that the error attributable to sampling and other random effects is plus or minus 2.4 percentage points. In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting telephone surveys may introduce some error or bias into the findings of opinion polls."

EDITOR's NOTE ::: "telephone interviews" are so 20th Century! All of the people I know under age 50 have cell phones, not land lines, and I am 99% sure the "folks" who participated in this research were contacted via land lines!

What’s that? You don’t know what cosplay is? Do a quick Google search and you’ll see. Yes, grown men and women dressing up like their favorite cartoon, anime and video game characters! Here's what wikpedia had to say:

Cosplay (コスプレ, kosupure), a portmanteau of the English words "costume" and "roleplay", is a Japanese subculture centered on dressing as characters from manga, anime, tokusatsu, and video games, and, less commonly, Japanese live action television shows, fantasy movies, or Japanese pop music bands. However, in some circles, "cosplay" has been expanded to mean simply wearing a costume.

In Japan, "cosplay" as a hobby is usually an end unto itself. Like-minded people gather to see others' costumes, show off their own elaborate handmade creations, take lots of pictures, and possibly participate in best costume contests.

The most specific anecdote about the origin of the word "cosplay" was that Nov Takahashi (from a Japanese studio called Studio Hard) coined the term "cosplay" as a contraction of the English-language words "costume play" while he was attending the 1984 Los Angeles Science Fiction Worldcon. He was so impressed by the hall and masquerade costuming there that he reported about it frequently in Japanese science fiction magazines. This point is debatable, however, as the word fits in with a common Japanese method of abbreviation: combining the first two syllables of one word with the first two syllables of a second word (or, more precisely, the first two moras of each). Other examples of this include Pokémon (ポケモン, Pokémon short for ポケットモンスター, or "Pocket Monsters") and puroresu (プロレス, puroresu short for プロレスリング, or "professional wrestling"
